Someone gave this picture to Jim at MGEPC in an envelope with Suzanne's name on it. She took it down and shared it with Dad and he was delighted. We didn't have a copy of this before now...what a cutie!!!

First Chemo Treatment

Treatment started today. Papa had to be at the doctor's office at 8am and treatment started around 9:30. They finished up around 11 and headed back to the beach. He has not noticed any side effects yet. Possible side effects can include nausea, vomiting, bleeding, fatigue, loss of appetite - these are the most common.

Papa will be receiving palliative chemotherapy http://www.getpalliativecare.org/2009/03/what-is-palliative-chemotherapy/ rather than curative chemotherapy. The side effects should not be as harsh as they would be with curative chemotherapy and Dr. McNulty said he sees 40% of his patients respond favorably. It is not to say that serious side effects are not a possibility, but not as common.

Hospice came yesterday to admit Papa into their care - they were absolutely wonderful! Palliative care was first considered, consisting of only one visit once a month; however, it was decided that Papa should be checked once a week. They said they could be called anytime with any questions or concerns and would be happy to come as often as needed. They are a valued addition to Papa's care team.

Regarding Paps's condition, please continue to pray for his healing, and regarding Papa's treatment that he has: 1. Little to no side effects with his chemotherapy 2. That he responds favorably and the medication does the job it is intended to do 3. Papa would have clear direction regarding his future treatments.

Suzanne is with him today and tonight, Rebecca B. will be going down tomorrow until Steve arrives Friday evening,  Steve will be staying with Papa Friday night through Sunday midday, Marcus and/or Brett will be with him Sunday through  Monday evening, and Jennifer will stay Monday night and Tuesday. Jennifer is working on a schedule to make sure Papa has someone with him or available to him  through Christmas. Love to everyone!!!

Fwd:

Message from Rebecca Gainey:

Rebecca B spoke to the pathology lab this morning and their manager, Kevin. he told her that those results have just become available. I just spoke to Faye (Dr. McNulty's nurse). Ruth from the pathology department called her this morning and said the results are available. She is waiting for them to fax the results to her at the Leland office where they are working today. I informed her that Dr McNulty said he wanted to meet with Papa early this week whether or not the lab results were in so could they just fit Papa in at the Leland office today. She is going to see what she can do and call me as soon as they receive fax (hopefully within 30 minutes). Please feel free to call them if you have questions, too @ 9103430447. Love you!!

Notes from Papa's first visit with Dr.Almirall 11/6/12

Welcome Everyone!

I know that this first entry is plain and mostly facts, but I wanted to get something up for you all as soon as possible. I will continue to enter the information and appointments that Papa has already had and hopefully have new information to share soon. Please feel free to leave stories, comments, questions, or any information that you might have, too! Love you all.

Papa went for his yearly physical with his primary care provider, Dr. Peter D.Almirall. Dr.Almirall noticed that Papa has had a significant weight loss and decreased appetite. He immediately schedule a CT scan. A CT (Computed Tomography) Scan is a radiological study that uses series of x-rays to show cross-sectional slices of the body. It can be done for the entire body, or for one specific organ. The CT scan uses shadowing to show bone, soft tissue, and blood vessels. It can also show masses, aneurysms, and blockages by using contrast dye, but the images are black and white; similar to what you would see on a x-ray. Papa had the CT scan performed on Tuesday, November 6th, 2012 at Dosher out patient center on Beach Road. Upon reviewing the scan, Dr.Almirall immediately called Papa back and asked him to come to his office and bring a family member. Needless to say we were all concerned and worried what the findings would be.

Suzanne and Jennifer took Papa back to Dr.Almirall's office and this is their account of what he said:  Cancerous lesions were found in the right lung and the liver. The cancer is most probably lung cancer that has metastasized to the liver. Because the cancer has spread out of it's primary site (the lungs), it is automatically classified as Stage IV Lung Cancer. The two most common types of lung cancer are Small Cell (which accounts for 20% of lung CA and is very fast growing) and Non-Small Cell (80% of lung CA, has four sub-categories, slower growing). The cancer is possibly treatable, but not curable. Common treatments include chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical resection. Other common sites of metastasis with this diagnosis are the bones and brain. More in-depth studies are needed to check Papa's bones and brain for "mets" or cells that have travelled from the lungs and formed lesions or masses. They will schedule an MRI of the brain and a nuclear bone scan as soon as possible. The plan is to do a needle biopsy of his liver instead of his lung as this is a much less invasive procedure that can be done under light sedation. Then Papa will need to meet with an oncologist to determine his prognosis and course of action.

Papa's dear friend was treated by a local oncologist, Dr.William McNulty, and he is requesting to follow-up with him. I have contacted Dr.McNulty's office and spoken to him personally. He would love to treat Papa and will fit him in immediately after his liver biopsy is completed.
